Brantôme Abbey
Description
The Benedictine abbey of Brantôme is undoubtedly one of the jewels in the crown of Périgord’s religious heritage. According to legend, it was founded by Charlemagne, who deposited there the relics of one of the Holy Innocents named Sicaire. It was originally built in troglodyte rock before gradually freeing itself from the rock.
4 tours are available to discover the rich history of the site: the abbey’s main building (formerly a pilgrims’ hostel), the grotto of the Last Judgement, the cloister, the abbey church and bell tower, and the quarries.
