Château de la Hierce
Description
The Château de La Hierce, located almost in the heart of the town of Brantôme, was built as a residence for pleasure between 1520 and 1530 during the reign of François 1st. The building is built on a limestone cliff with caves in between. It is one of the finest examples of Renaissance architecture in Périgord. Built on a site that has been occupied for several thousand years, as evidenced by the troglodyte dwellings adjoining the monument and the prehistoric engravings decorating one of the caves, La Hierce is the only example in Périgord of a castle with exclusively Renaissance architecture, devoid of any medieval or Gothic influences. Fully listed as a Historic Monument since 1892, the 8 rooms open to the public house one of the finest collections of furniture in Périgord, as well as numerous other collections.
