Château de Mareuil

mareuil

Description

The seat of one of the four baronies of Périgord (along with Beynac, Biron and Bourdeilles), Château de Mareuil is a plain castle rebuilt in the 15th century on the site of a medieval stronghold destroyed during the Hundred Years’ War. Located in the Périgord-Limousin Regional Nature Park, the imposing silhouette of the castle stands at the entrance to Mareuil, revealing a flamboyant Gothic-style residence.
Access to the château’s inner courtyard is via a stone bridge and a gateway with a portcullis. Inside, the rooms are decorated with fine paintings and furnished with Louis XV, Louis XVI and Regency period furniture. In addition to a flamboyant Gothic chapel, Château de Mareuil – which can be visited by appointment only – also houses a museum dedicated to Marshal Lannes. Guided tours only
