Cluzeaux de Saint-Pardoux-de-Mareuil

Description

The cluzeaux at Saint-Pardoux-de-Mareuil belong to the category of cliff bottom cluzeaux, which are more often than not natural caves created by man as early as the High Middle Ages. There is every reason to believe that a Christian religious community occupied these shelters in the early centuries of our era. The characteristics of troglodytic settlements can be found at Saint-Pardoux: grain silos, water cisterns, niches, shelves, troughs… The existence of sarcophagi outside the site suggests the presence of a necropolis on the hill.
