The grotto of the Last Judgement

brantôme

Description

Founded according to legend by Charlemagne, the Benedictine abbey of Brantôme was troglodytic at the beginning of its history. The limestone cliffs behind the monastery buildings contain caves that bear witness to the original occupation of the site: the “Last Judgement” cave with its two monumental bas-reliefs, and a fountain dedicated to Saint Sicaire. The caves also contain remains of dwellings and dovecotes. Self-guided and/or guided tours.
