Description
Château de Puyguilhem, built in the 16th century for Mondot de la Marthonie, stands in elegant Renaissance style in Villars, near Brantôme in the woods of Périgord Vert. From the perfectly trimmed boxwood clumps in front of the listed building, take a look at its harmonious volumes: the main building, pierced by mullioned windows, is flanked by towers and turrets of varying shapes.
Inside, a vast grand staircase leads you to rooms furnished and decorated with tapestries. Admire the exceptional fireplace depicting the twelve labours of Hercules, then head up to the gallery on the top floor of the château, with its oak framework in the shape of an upside-down ship’s hull. Villars also has other tourist attractions in store, including one of the finest decorated caves in Périgord and Boschaud Abbey.
